I was looking
around the Internet this morning for information for another project when I
found this uber cool photo of R.A. Dickey, showing us his knuckleball grip.
I have a couple
of questions: how in the name of Edward Victor Cicotte can anyone throw a
baseball with that grip? And how can anyone – I know it takes a lot of patience
and practice – toss a baseball and have it not spin? Having tried several times
to throw a knuckleball, the ability to throw a spinless baseball amazes me. The
speed in which Dickey throws the pitch is even more amazing.
I've heard
that my grandpa had a pretty good playground knuckleball. He, of course, was way
too modest to ever mention to me any of his athletics exploits. But his brother
shared that tidbit one day shortly after my grandpa's funeral, and I have no reason
not to believe him. I just wish I had gotten some of that talent… any talent,
for that matter.
